Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni – 02

I don’t know if I had drugs in my water or the second half really was that good but it’s been a long time since I was laughing so hard. The beauty contest…seriously…it was awesome. These were the five best comedy minutes in seasons (with the exception of Level E).

I was pleasantly surprised to see that this week continues right were last week ended. At first I lost what the heck was going on but after Akihisa woke up everything became clear and the funnier. Baka Test really knows how to be a generic comedy while being no generic comedy at the same time. I know it sounds strange but compare Baka Test to Mayo Chiki and you will notice how the latter series uses the genre tropes without any variation or creativity. Baka Test on the other hand is one of the few series that goes for a full beach episode arc, only to go even further by combining that with a festival and a beauty contest on top of it.

The festival also had the nice twist to it that we all know something really bad will happen sooner than later. The girls act in full generic stereotype girl mode here and because we know them so well thanks to last season we also know that something’s off. I really wondered what epic idea the could have and I feared for some minutes that the creators wouldn’t be able to pull it off. But man, I was so wrong.

The beauty contest is seriously the most hilarious thing I saw in seasons. How crossdressed Akihisa (who looks like Ohana) in his stupidity triggered all the necessary flags was his crowning moment of awesome(ly stupid). When he goes for the kill and says he wears no underwear was the icing on the cake and I was short of dying from laughter. But it got even worse for me when Muttsurini enters the stage after a cool “Man, thanks for screwing up”-pose and pat. And boy, his way of screwing up was equally epic and funny when he forgot that he wasn’t a cosplay otaku but a girl in a beauty contest. I can understand why the crowd went mental. Oh, and let’s not forget the funny nod to Some Like It Hot.

The rest after the beauty contest was over was funny albeit lacking in comparison but at least reminded me again of Himeji’s deadly cooking skills. Well, although the main premise of Baka Test is the duels of the stupids against the geniuses I always dig some variation, especially when it’s executed that well. And let’s be honest here: two seasons of only duels and fighting gets boring and repetitive really fast when you’re no genius.

Nevertheless I can’t wait to see the duels again, but at the same time I’m kind of worried now. Thanks to this week I ask myself how he heck the creators can top the beauty contest. I seriously don’t know.

But I can’t wait to find out.
